Overview

The Takeaway is a Chrome extension that generates AI-powered summaries for Gmail emails and web pages. We are committed to protecting your privacy and being transparent about how we handle your data.

Data We Access

Gmail Data

• What we access: Subject lines, sender information, and email body content of your unread emails
• Why: To generate concise summaries that help you decide if an email is worth reading
• Scope: We only access emails you explicitly view or that are processed by our background service

Web Page Data

• What we access: Page title and text content of web pages you visit
• Why: To generate summaries when you click the "Generate Summary" button
• When: Only when you explicitly request a summary

How We Process Your Data

1. AI Processing: Email and webpage content is sent to an AI provider to generate summaries. On the free trial (default) it goes to Google's Gemini API through our secure proxy. If you add your own API key, content is sent directly from your browser to the provider you chose — Google Gemini, OpenAI, or Anthropic.
2. Anonymous usage metering: To enforce the free-trial limit, the extension generates a random anonymous ID (a UUID, not linked to your identity) stored locally and sent with proxy requests to count how many free summaries an installation has used. It contains no personal data.
3. No Storage on Our Servers: We do not store your emails, webpage content, or summaries on any external server
4. Local Storage Only: Generated summaries, your settings, and any API key you provide are cached locally in your browser's storage

Data We Do NOT Collect

• We do NOT store your email content on our servers
• We do NOT track your browsing history
• We do NOT sell or share your data with third parties
• We do NOT use your data for advertising
• We do NOT collect personal identification information

Third-Party Services

We use AI providers to generate summaries. Content is sent only to produce summaries and is not retained by us:

• Google Gemini API — used for the free trial (via our proxy) and if you select Gemini with your own key. Processed per Google's Privacy Policy.
• OpenAI API — used only if you select OpenAI and provide your own key. Processed per OpenAI's Privacy Policy.
• Anthropic API — used only if you select Anthropic and provide your own key. Processed per Anthropic's Privacy Policy.

Your Control

You have full control over your data:

• Skip Sites/Senders: You can exclude specific websites or email senders from being processed
• Clear Data: You can clear all cached summaries at any time through Chrome's extension settings
• Uninstall: Removing the extension deletes all locally stored data

Data Security

• All communication with our proxy server and AI providers uses HTTPS encryption
• The shared free-trial API key is stored securely on our server, never exposed in the extension code
• Any API key you provide is stored only in your browser's local storage on your device — it is never sent to our servers, and is transmitted only to your chosen AI provider
• No Gmail authentication credentials are stored by us; Gmail access uses Chrome's built-in OAuth

Children's Privacy

This extension is not intended for children under 13 years of age.

Changes to This Policy

We may update this privacy policy from time to time. We will notify users of any material changes by updating the "Last updated" date.
